Melancholia: good story, bad camerawork

Brad, an old friend from Georgia Tech, and I went to Melancholia last night as part of AFI Fest. It was a neat evening. We went out to dinner first and Kirsten Dunst showed up for the screening.

I feel conflicted about the movie. It has an interesting story and great acting. Kirsten Dunst plays a woman who is suffering from extreme melancholia as the end of the world nears (unbeknown by any of the characters). Charlotte Gainsbourg plays her long suffering sister, who believes the planet that's about to approach Earth and do a "fly-by" is going to hit us, despite the fact that "the scientists" claim that it will not.

It was tremendous visually, at least when the camera wasn't shaking. I don't know if they were trying for an "intimate" look or whether they just had a really bad camera operator, but the camera work literally made me nauseous. Granted, we were sitting quite close to the screen, but I had to spend much of the movie looking away from screen because I felt sick. (I had the same problem with Rachel Getting Married.)

It's hard to feel very positively about a movie you sat through trying not to be sick, but I think it was actually a great movie. I might recommend sitting the back of the theater, though.
